Ashok Leyland Breaks Ground on EV Battery Pack Manufacturing Facility in Tamil Nadu Manufacturing

Ashok Leyland has commenced construction of a greenfield battery pack manufacturing facility in Pillaipakkam near Chennai, Tamil Nadu, with an estimated investment of ₹400–500 crore. The facility represents a strategic step toward strengthening the company’s electric vehicle ecosystem and accelerating its transition into sustainable commercial mobility.

The new plant is expected to support Ashok Leyland’s expanding electric truck and bus portfolio, enabling greater vertical integration in EV manufacturing. By localizing battery pack production, the company aims to enhance supply chain resilience, reduce dependency on external suppliers, and improve cost efficiencies in its electric commercial vehicle operations.

The project forms part of the Hinduja Group’s broader investment commitments under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with the Tamil Nadu government in September 2025. In addition to strengthening manufacturing capabilities, the facility is also expected to generate significant employment opportunities in the region.

The investment aligns with India’s growing push toward electric mobility, supported by government initiatives such as the FAME scheme and Production Linked Incentive (PLI) programs, aimed at accelerating EV adoption and domestic manufacturing.
